1974 Formula One Surtees TS16 Team Matchbox

From 1972 to 1974 Matchbox Toys were a major sponsor of Formula 1 and Formula 2 motor racing with their own team, "Team Matchbox".

In 1972 Team Matchbox had 2 cars in Formula 2, both Surtees TS10's. They were driven by John Surtees (5 times world Motor Cycle Champion and a former World Motor Racing Champion) and Mike Hailwood (9 times World Motor Cycle Champion). Mike Hailwood won the 1972 European Formula 2 season for Team Matchbox.

In 1974 the partnership of Team Matchbox and Surtees moved to Formula One using 2 Surtees TS16's. Drivers for the team were Carlos Pace from Brazil and Jochen Mass.

In the first race of the season at the British Grand Prix, Jochen Mass was involved in a multiple crash on the first lap ending his race. By the end of the season Carlos Pace was in 12th place while Jochen Mass finished in 23rd.

Team Matchbox dissolved at the end of 1974 due to financial problems for both Surtees and Matchbox.
